Iraq order for South African company
South African hydraulic pump specialist APE Pumps has won an R7 million order to install a fourth pump alongside the existing three at a water supply project in Iraq.
The pump will be installed in a key pump house within the Karbala water supply project, a R20-billion development to deliver water from the Karbala Dam to various population centres in southeast Iraq. According to Eric Bruggeman, APE Pumps managing director, the 1600 mm single-stage vertical turbine pump will rank alongside its three predecessors as the biggest yet manufactured by the company. The pump has been designed to fit an existing sump and align with existing pump house pipework. Its base will fit existing foundations.
The order placed by USA-based project management company, Washington International Inc, includes motor supply and a comprehensive set of spare parts for the giant pump, which will weigh 36 tons when fitted with its 1300kW electric motor. The duty will be 4000 litres per second at heads of 12-20 m.
